just tried it, again, and then started digging. on the first attempt, i got the linking error then i fired up xc 15.0.1, and looked at the xcode command-line tools - sure enough, it was set to 14.2. i changed that to 15.0.1, and now the builds link with 9.6.11 and xc 15.0.1
