Yep, found it and added a comment. That limitation does not make any
sense :-)
Scott Raney explained it to me. Images are drawn using their own color
palette. That includes their border. If the color you want doesn't match
a color that is already in the color palette, it can't be drawn.
At least, that's how it was ten years ago.
