I think if the domain being hit is a virtual, you can't get there with the ip directly because apache doesn't know what domain you're asking for. That would explain why if you hit the IP it gives the generic apache page.
Same thing happens lots of places. If I ping my domain on on-rev it returns 74.54.153.72, but going there goes to an interesting apache page that says..
