Allan:
Got this idea about starting an initiative to recognize apps that comply with GNOME standards, which may or may not be limited to the HIG. I'm not sure what else to consider. The motivation behind is to pay homage to those deserving projects, promote the use of those apps vs. noncompliant alternatives, promote the use of GNOME standards so more apps will comply, and help the development of the HIG (and maybe other standards) gain traction.
Although GNOME does not yet offer anything like an "App Store", I could easily imagine that it could someday. I think a "GNOME" Certification process could have unique implications in relation to something like this. I wonder how much we should be considering how to make sure our certification process can grow with our needs over time. While I do think there is good value in having a GNOME certification process to highlight good GNOME applications, I also wonder if there might be some value in discussing how certification could work across free desktops. There could be value in having some common FreeDesktop aspects to certification, for example. At any rate, there may be some benefit in touching base with the KDE community to discuss whether there might be any opportunities for cooperative collaboration in the general area of certification of free desktop software.
