This all partially already exists. There's e.g. conduit in GNOME.
Also see the last two years of debating the "Online Desktop".

And there are many examples of such apps on other platforms... one I sometimes use on OS X is EventBox, which allows access to Facebook, Twitter, Identi.ca, Flickr, OneRiot, Reddit, and Digg, in addition to arbitrary RSS feeds.
