Reflecting on all this, maybe we are overthinking the problem. The most common scenario only requires this system-wide options:
- Play all sounds at the system volume. - Diminish all sounds except for the current application (default option). - Mute completely all sounds except for the current application. KISS principle at work. Everything else is food for the power user.
