I actually brought up those arguments when the widget was being discussed to be included in GTK+, see http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=415775 comment #12. Unfortunately I didn't write it nor did anyone else, the only implementation was the current one. And, well, it's easy to dismiss one solution when it's not implemented and you already have another fully functional one. What would have been nice to see was an actual usability study about it or at least the input from an usability expert which didn't happen. I also didn't know about this list at the time. Anyway, this is free software after all, so should be up to be changed in the future if people care and agree. Actually from GTK+'s POV it would have to be a completely new widget and keep the current one around for backwards compatibility.
