I experience the same with Firefox (less browsing space in Gnome), with Thunderbird (more spacing in the list of recipient) and any other app. Gnome / Ubuntu default theme wastes a lot of scarce and very valuable screen real estate to an average user with 20/20 vision http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_acuity those with better than average suffer even more.
