I agree the current situation is not that great. I think it would be possible to have a lirc-modules-2.6...deb like there are linux-restricted-modules-* However they probably should be rebuilt on kernel update and personnaly I will not have time to work on this right now.
I see the package I uploaded has not yet been committed.
