to me lenses have the potential to be much more than they are now. they could even have their API expanded and become apps in their own merit (unity exclusives, differentiators and very well integrated). Of course since lenses are optional they are not forced upon anyone either.
Would be cool to see what kind of "app-lenses" (like that cool "music-player-lens" mockup) people come up with (app-lens showdown!). :) Maybe in like a year we could see something like this start appearing.
