Oh I am a die hard Marlin fanboy, so if the call was up to me I would have went with Marlin :) Anyway, why I think Marlin should draw the desktop is because the current implementation of the panel shadow depends on the file manager drawing the desktop. Disable the desktop drawing from gnome-tweak-tool and you have no panel shadow. Also, if I remember correctly, disabling that will also disable the ability of opening the Dash with pressing super (a.k.a. Windows key) and possibly more keyboard shortcuts. Last, but not least having no file manager to draw the desktop means that there will be no desktop icons. Marlin dev - am-monkeyd is a great guy to talk with, and he will be open to talk about contributions to Marlin :)
