well g-shell has tons of different styles, it just depends on theme.
some cool examples:http://gnome-shell.deviantart.com/gallery/28081982
i think ubuntu needs to allow for people to come up with nice looking themes
and visual styles for 12.10 onward.

What I would propose is a new style that to some extent matches the look of the
quicklists for the launcher, and something similar to what can be found in
GNOME Shell. I think using a more rounded 'bubble' would also make it easier to
see which menu is currently active.

I've attached an image, which shows the similarities between the shape of
quicklists and GS menus.

Thoughts?

Interesting idea. My main concern is with the global menu. I'm not sure this
style would fit well for 'File' or 'Edit' menus, for example, but if we leave
the old style menus for those then the top bar becomes inconsistent. What do
you think?
