I agree your "category view" would help make the apps lens better. A few other 
additions that would also improve the apps lens would be:

-Filters: If it also shows them by default would work better for most people, 
make their browsing easier than the current and minimize their complains.

-Apps available for download: I believe download suggestions should only appear 
searches (and maybe also after clicking on the filters, but not when showing 
all). Most relevant first. A link to get more apps could also be shown.

-Recent apps: is already in the home lens, it could be kept, but probably not 
necessarily expanded.

    yeah, this is the problem I have with it. If it is a separate lens
    then the global search would return results from the core apps lens
    and my alternative lens which would double up the results (I think).

    I kind of don't really want to do this myself, I just want the
    regular apps lens to work how I want it to, but I am not sure how
    intentional the current behavior is.
