What's more surprising is that Pali wasn't regularly written in the Thai script until Rama IV ordered the change. Instead, the Buddhist script in his domains was the Khom script (a variety of the Khmer script, with several unencoded characters for Thai) in the south and the Tai Tham script in the north.
