mzc confirmed that the question is solved:
nvidia restricted driver still does not show up on the gui....but works
fine using cli.. I was able to install the 185.18 driver using the how
to from the ubuntu forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1125400&highlight=nvidia+ion
this also fixes computer from crashes when opening power management.
