Tom proposed the following answer:
Yup. First thing is to check the machines specifications; cpu speed,
ram size and hard-drive space available for Ubuntu. For example 700MHz
cpu, 512Mb ram and 10Gb hard-drive space?
Before installing any distro to a machine it's worth trying to run it as a
LiveCd. You can check the LiveCd session works now by putting the Ubuntu Cd in
the cd/dvd-drive and rebooting the machine. If you don't get to a menu saying
"Try Ubuntu without changes to this machine" then here's a guide to help
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD
if you do get that option in the menu then choosing it should get you to a
working desktop, which we call a "LiveCd session", if it works ;)
The LiveCd session of Ubuntu should be able to pick-up on your internet
connection straight away, with mos other distros you have to click a few
buttons in their control panel first. And so you can use firefox to
surf straight into here or elsewhere from that :)
Ok, so please let us know if you manage to get a LiveCd session working and
also let us know the 3 crucial machine specs :)
Thanks, good luck and regards from
Tom :)
