After much effort and searching it turns out the video cable, not the 
projector, was the source for the problem. (Groan).
Windows XP only manages 800×600 with that cable so I don’t think it’s a Ubuntu 
bug that I can only achieve 1024×768.

All my apologies for the disturbance. Closing as invalid and deleting
attachments for privacy reasons.
