With same graphic chipset i915 and kubuntu maverick amd64 updated daily I don't get any freeze since two days, but effects too are not active at startup and window miniatures are empty. If i switch to Xrender miniatures are shown, effects are enabled at startup, but I loose most of them and compositing is much slower. (with Lucid It's ALL ok, indeed). Hope this can help :) Thanks.
