It turns out that I did upgrade the X packages to 1.9 (I was confused by the 1.8.99... version number). I'm sorry Harry, your first suggestion was right from the beginning. As far as the workaround, sadly, it didn't work. I'm attaching the Xorg log in case it provides any useful information. At least now I know that downgrading the X packages will probably fix the problem. Thanks.
