@quequotion - I would say this is more likely a race condition between the loading of the nvidia kernel module and the starting of X / gdm - basically I think what is happening is that the module is loaded but X / gdm starts up before it has finished initialising the hardware and hence the X nvidia driver fails to load correctly. At least this is what I think is probably happening...
