A) xserver-xorg-input-synaptics is already the newest version

B) gpointing-device-settings was not installed, but I did install it and
it added a menu item System > Preferences > Pointing Devices

Going into System > Preferences > Mouse I still cannot see a Touchpad
tab,

Going into the new System > Preferences > Pointing Devices menu item, I
do not see anything except that the system has detected a Im/PS2
Logitech Wheel Mouse which is not the case (though I did at one point
attach a USB Logitech keyboard/mouse setup, but that is not the case at
the moment).
