This issue affects me as well. In fact once while writing this post :-/ Sometimes I am able to ssh into my machine to give it a graceful shutdown. Often I have to press the Reset button, which I hate. Even being able to open a ssh session does not necessarily mean that a "shutdown -r now" will work.
I cannot find anything inside my system logs either.
