Since posting my comment on 2009-12-28, I've upgraded last week to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and the issue for me seems to have been resolved. But as I noted previously, I'm on a Lenovo ThinkPad x61 and was previously experiencing the same reported problem with Ubuntu 9.10.
