Thanks Ubfan. It took a few tries/crashes but I was able to do a quick enough click to set the screensaver back to blank. Believe me I've looked through all possible log files and do not remember seeing "missing bonono socket" in any of the error messages. "Wedged hardware" seems to recur often though. Time will only tell if any more freezes occur but thanks to you it is not happening when the screensaver is tripped. The odd thing about this is that I only applied the antspotlight saver not any of the GL variety of savers. Antspotlight worked just fine in karmic though the gui would freeze in one of the logic games (wouldn't technically call it 3d.) and after being on for more than 20 minutes in any program. After spending way to much time reading related bug reports I definately think the problem lies in how the latest ubuntu release handles i845 chipset. I'm still mystified as to 1) how to get apport to run, even after connecting to the above link suggested by Bryce and pasted the instructions to enable it; 2) why I get an error message that controdicts what I have installed and 3) what lspci -vnn is and where is it might be located.
