I've got a 5850 and noticed the same problem upon booting the 10.04 AMD64 install CD. I booted with two monitors connected via DVI ports and saw the blank screen issue. I booted with a single HDMI connection and saw the same blank screen issue. I booted with a single DVI connection and was X worked fine for me. I was able to complete an install. Hope that helps someone, if there is any more information I can provide I'd be happy to do so if it will help.
