Hi Mike, you're right; I can't seem to figure out where the GDM
configuration went...

Try creating a simple custom.conf file at /usr/share/gdm/custom.conf
containing the following two lines:

[daemon]
GdmXserverTimeout=60

If this doesn't work, it will tell us that either:

1) Your problem is not the GDM timeout issue
2) The version of GDM distributed with Lucid ignores custom.conf
3) Both of the above
