Using nomodeset or i915.modeset=0 on a Dell C400 (82830 / i830 chipset) works fine and the xv interface is available again. It does have the side effect that the boot splash causes a segmentation fault on the console which screws up the font and causes boot delays. Removing splash from the boot line fixes this.
