Splash screen is now turned off. Still hangs Comment 8 shows the last things printed to the console when fglrx is installed, although it got a big munged when I typed it in.
The system boots when fglrx is removed, I just get the "low res desktop" warning, then I can get to the login screen and my gnome desktop.
