I found this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1443520 Which suggested bypassing GDM and starting X from the command line. This worked for me and I was able to play Alien Arena with nvidia-96. However, the game would lock up if it attempted to change resolution or switch to full-screen.
