I am also having this issue on an AMD 64 system with a readoen 3200 HD card. As mentioned above, the screen goes black, but there is still a cursor. Sometimes I can change virtual terminals to VT1 and restart GDM, other times I cannot. Typically, pressing the VT1 key combo and then pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL will safely reboot the computer, but there is nothing displayed on the screen.
