I'm pretty sure that when the bug first appeared (in Jaunty) I was running the same version of nvidia's drivers in both Intrepid and Jaunty, and Intrepid didn't have the problem.
Note it's not just the nvidia driver that has a problem - VirtualBox's video driver also doesn't refresh the screen. In fact, with the current Lucid running in a VM, you don't even get the initial screen being drawn - I get either a black screen or the purple background coming through.
