KeithM, I came to think about one thing. We carry a not-bleeding-edge xserver-xorg-video-intel (2.9.1) since that gives us possibility for UMS fallback for people who have problems on their hardware and has been very stable. It may be possible that a newer driver will be able to not keep resetting indefinitely. That is, it will probably still hang, since that seems to be a kernel problem, but it may fail more graciously. Could you try the xorg-edgers PPA which contains the newest drivers and grab the same files as last time when/if it hangs again? You can upload the files directly to the upstream bug report, saying that this is from xorg-edgers.
