Have the same problem. Pretty annoying must admit. It seems like its because of something in KDE 4.4 as i didnt had this before as i was using gnome. System was upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 (one year of gnome without the bug) to ubuntu 9.10 and kde 4.4.
The bug is pretty rare, around 1 time a day. output from syslog: 2010-03-16 15:20:41 acer-aspire-5630 wpa_supplicant[613] CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS 2010-03-16 15:21:33 acer-aspire-5630 avahi-daemon[540] Invalid query packet. 2010-03-16 15:22:41 acer-aspire-5630 avahi-daemon[540] last message repeated 7 times 2010-03-16 15:22:41 acer-aspire-5630 wpa_supplicant[613] CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS 2010-03-16 15:24:05 acer-aspire-5630 kdm[1272] X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly 2010-03-16 15:24:06 acer-aspire-5630 console-kit-daemon[548] GLib-GObject-WARNING: instance with invalid (NULL) class pointer 2010-03-16 15:24:06 acer-aspire-5630 console-kit-daemon[548] GLib-GObject-CRITICAL: g_signal_emit_valist: assertion `G_TYPE_CHECK_INSTANCE (instance)' failed 2010-03-16 15:24:06 acer-aspire-5630 console-kit-daemon[548] GLib-GObject-CRITICAL: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed 2010-03-16 15:24:06 acer-aspire-5630 acpid client 1285[0:0] has disconnected 2010-03-16 15:24:06 acer-aspire-5630 acpid client connected from 8527[0:0] 2010-03-16 15:24:07 acer-aspire-5630 acpid client connected from 8527[0:0] 2010-03-16 15:24:10 acer-aspire-5630 kdm_greet[8548] Cannot load /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/faces/.default.face: No such file or directory I wanted to show all around that record - 2010-03-16 15:24:05 acer-aspire-5630 kdm[1272] X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly (so, it seems like the problem really is that server is falling, and nothing to do with kde) There is also some important stuff in x.org log: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 22955 2010-03-16 15:27 Xorg.0.log -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 16407 2010-03-16 15:24 Xorg.0.log.old (so it seems that Xorg.0.log.old was created right after/before the crash) this was found in the end of Xorg.0.log.old: (**) Logitech USB Optical Mouse: (accel) filter stage 0: 20.00 ms (**) Logitech USB Optical Mouse: (accel) set acceleration profile 0 (II) Logitech USB Optical Mouse: initialized for relative axes.
