I too am experiencing this problem. I have several computers with the old Intel chipsets. I've attempted several "work-arounds" suggested in the forums. I registered/subscribed today to help in any way I could. As shadetree stated in comment #47 "There are thousands and thousands of these older chip-set PC's that are moving to linux". I've converted a few myself. I am a very enthusiastic supporter of Ubuntu because as shadetree stated, "8.04 was out of the box working perfect". Ubuntu is suposed to be easy to use. Suggesting that we might consider upgrading hardware in order to accommodate the limitations of the OS is: 1) for many not easy. 2) a practice that drove me to investigate converting to Linux. OK, I'll get off my soapbox and go back to work.
