I believe the problem is less specific than the i945gma drivers. After setting up the monitor properly (so that it identifies over the VGA connection) X becomes aware it is an IBM monitor, but mislabels it as 16" (it's 17") and sets the maximum resolution to 1024x768 (should be 1280x1024). While unidentified, it is set to 1152x864.
