There is a patch upstream to libdrm that should fix many issues like this one. I have added this patch to the Lucid version of libdrm and uploaded it to my PPA: https://launchpad.net/~gomyhr/+archive/standard . Could you add my PPA to your sources list and run `sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade` and check if this stops the freezes?
