I can confirm this problem, I'm experiencing the same symptoms on a dell dimension 2350 with a pentium 4 2.0 MHz, same chipset, karmic, etc.
Reinstalling does not fix the problem, but using the older (2.4) intel xorg driver significantly helped. My processor usage dropped from about 90% while watching movies to about 50% (which is still too much) after changing drivers, but I still can't watch hulu (very choppy). here's a link: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReinhardTartler/X/RevertingIntelDriverTo2.4 Also if your screen does freeze do this: 1) press control, alt, and f2 2) you'll come to a black screen that says your computer name and login (e.g. 'computer name' login:) i) login in with your user name and then enter your password 3) then when you've reached the command line enter: i) sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart ii) enter your password This should bring your screen back. 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 03) Subsystem: Dell Device 0147 Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16 Memory at e0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M] Memory at ee000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K] Capabilities: <access denied> Kernel driver in use: i915 Kernel modules: i915 -- [i82845G/GL Brookdale-G] Screen freeze after while of working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/502055 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
