Through several reboots I have narrowed the problem device to be my PCIMIA TrendNet Model TU2-H4PC 4 port USB root hub. With the same USB devices plugged into a different root hub, Lucid boots normally.
It may possibly be responsible for the spontaneous shutting down/logging out that occurs periodically in Lucid.
