Actually, I solved my problem, which was fglrx-related. Removing /etc/ati/amdpcsdb was the solution to my error message "fglrx: Unknown EDID version 0". X server failed to start and I was in the situation described above.
Anyway it looks like this is happening any time X11 fails to start. Hope you'll find your way !
