An upgrade within 9.10 on x86_64 causes this problem, too. I've even tried creating /etc/X11/xorg.conf, purging xserver.org from the system, swapping xdm for kdm, and even wiping Kubuntu 9.10 from the HD and re- installing. Still stuck at 800x600 instead of using the full 1680x1050.
