Installing the latest vertified nVidia drivers (190.42) seems to fix the problem, suggesting that its origin is in an interaction between the linux kjernel, java, and older versions of the nVidia driver. I'll stick to this solution until an updated nvidia driver package is released through the regular Ubuntu channels.
