I have the same problem with the Spanish keyboard.

After updating to Ubuntu 24.10 with GNOME 47 using Wayland, some
keyboard key combinations don't work in certain applications anymore.

Especifically, and as you mentioned, when using AltGr+X or AltGr+Z,
nothing happens in applications like Firefox, Evolution or Geary. That
key combination should render « and » (Guillemets, or Spanish/French
quotes) when the keyboard is set to Spanish in GNOME Settings, which is
my case, and it worked well before the update. It still works as
expected in other applications like Gnome Web or Libre Office.

I reinstalled the affected apps, switched them between flatpak, deb and
snap, rebooted the system, tried all possible combinations in both GNOME
and the affected apps settings, even tried with different keyboards and
devices... Nothing worked.

Finally I restarted the system selecting X.Org/X11 instead of Wayland
and, as it happened so many times before when something is broken, the
problem was gone.

So I assume the bug is, indeed, related to Wayland somehow.

May I suggest changing the title of this bug report to a more general
"Missing characters on keyboard under Wayland", since it also affects
other language settings? Thank you.

(I filed the bug under the wayland package)

** Package changed: ubuntu => wayland (Ubuntu)
