I agree that felix's patch is superior (apparently the empty buffer's load faster than the ones containing random memory contents, besides the already discussed security and aestethics aspects), but at least for me, i'm experiencing memory leaks with both alternatives.
Incidentally, i seem to observe a higher memory leaking with newer X versions as karmic release approaches than in jaunty or firts karmic betas... do you think that a memory usage test in a virual machine will do any good? i can set up a couple of vms and leave them running to see memory usage patterns...
