I had the same issue on an old Dell laptop with intel video. Vanilla Ubuntu mate crashed on an attempt to start Dosbox. I have applied the proposed patch (with a minor conflict resolved manually) over the latest xserver-xorg available in jammy 21.1.4-2ubuntu1.7~22.04.1, and rebuilt the package. Works like a charm. I hope it will come out of the box in the next 22.04 update.
