Nothing in regular Ubuntu calls 'xrandr --brightness' that I know of.
Hence I recommend uninstalling 'brightness-controller' because it's the
most suspicious package right now.

Also I would expect 'GNOME' to avoid the problem more than 'GNOME on
Xorg' because 'GNOME' has no Xorg server and no support for 'xrandr
--brightness'. But still it would be very helpful to test both 'GNOME'
and 'GNOME on Xorg'.
