from the bad log:

[ 8.933] (II) systemd-logind: took control of session
/org/freedesktop/login1/session/c15
[ 8.933] (II) xfree86: Adding drm device (/dev/dri/card0)
[ 8.934] (II) systemd-logind: got fd for /dev/dri/card0 226:0 fd 12 paused 1
[ 8.934] (EE) Error systemd-logind returned paused fd for drm node
[ 8.934] (II) systemd-logind: releasing fd for 226:0

dunno why it would do that, but dmesg output from a bad boot might
reveal more, so could you attach that? Run 'dmesg > dmesg.txt' when
booting without nomodeset and attach it here.
