After reboot indeed I was back on a low resolution and without Nvidia graphic 
driver.
A complete uninstall via 
sudo apt remove nvidia*
and afterwards installing the opensource 440 driver via additional driver fixed 
the issue.

That was just like under Windows 95
- reboot into safe mode
- remove driver
- reboot
- install lates driver
- reboot
