On the shell selection page upon login there are four listed shells: Gnome , Gnome on Xorg , Gnome on Xorg , Mate (Default) ,
I don't see, "Ubuntu" or "Ubuntu on Wayland" I tested GNOME, and both the entries called "GNOME ON XORG" the other three but never got to test DP or HDMI because they wouldn't display properly on the laptop's own screen display. Upon loging in it looked as if I had a magnifying glass through which I could see only a small portion of the desktop. Moving the mouse would move magnifying glass and thus I could see more of the desktop. xrandr reported the resolution was 1900x1080. very strange.
