Hm, this makes sense. Maybe, after xorg/nvidia driver detects monitors as root (calling "sudo startx" from the console, has the same effect as running lightdm) they are cached somewhere, or maybe Xorg/nvidia driver changes permissions, so rootless Xorg cann then detect monitors in following sessions.
