I was able to install E17 on another amd64 system with the nvidia driver install. It has a similar failure. The screen was blank, but on this system the mouse cursor was displayed, and the keyboard worked.
I finally stumbled across the setup instructions at: https://www.enlightenment.org/distros/ubuntu-start Using that I upgraded to the latest enlightenment (E21) which seems to have fixed the problem on my test machine.
